Seventh Disappointing Blog Post

For the seventh week's blog post, I chose the song "Eleanor Rigby," from The Beatles.  Before we listened to this one during class, I had only heard this particular Beatles song in the movie "Yesterday."  As I listened to it for this week's post, I was blown away by this piece!  The musicality of this song is crazy, and unique compared to other songs by The Beatles.  The background music for this song employs a classical octet, with four violins, two violas, and two cellos.  Because all of these string instruments are being used, this song stands out.  Not only from other songs this group has put out, but other songs from similar groups within the era.

Because of the immediate start/rush into the song, it can startle you at first listen.  I can't really tell if the score played by the various string instruments sounds happy or sad.  I feel as though the music kind of contradicts the lyrics a bit though, with confusing and somewhat melancholy lyrics.  As we talked about in class, the storyline contained in the lyrics doesn't really go anywhere.  It just kind of  "is."  They talk about two different people, Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie, and then they have a repeated lyric, "Ah, look at all the lonely people.  Where do they all come from?"  And then the lyric changes at the end to, "Where do they all belong?"

The lyrics can be a bit discouraging if you look into them, but even then you might not understand them fully.  I found that the first two lines of each verse of the story make sense, but the ending three lines don't really correlate or make sense immediately.  I wish I could talk to Paul McCartney and John Lennon about the meaning behind this song!  Though, if you looked and researched hard enough, you could probably figure something out.

I really love the song  "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles!!  All of the work put towards the overall composition really payed off.  The end result brings so many different emotions and questions about the song, and I honestly love it!

  2. I don’t think I have ever heard this song until class, but I would agree with you that the song is something else! The way that they’re able to capture so many different emotions while keeping you engaged throughout the whole song is something that not everyone can do, but they manage to do it perfectly in this song (P.S. I hope that you're having a great day!!)

  3. I love this song too! I love the Beatles, they are so good. I agree with you that the string instruments really makes the song so unique and fun to listen to! I think it's interesting how lots of songs have happy music and then if you really listen to the lyrics, you realize that it's actually kind of sad. I really liked your blog! Very well done.
