Fifth Disappointing Blog Post

For this fifth blog post, I decided to listen to the song, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"  by Hank Williams.  I chose this song because I wanted to look into it a little bit more, the lyrics specifically.  I also wanted a bit more of a chill song for this week.  Anyway, even before we listened to Williams' song in class, I think everyone could tell what kind of song it was, and the feel/emotion that would come from listening to it.  I think everyone could guess what Hank's song was about just by reading the title of it.

There isn't really a chorus, though it says "I'm so lonesome I could cry at the end of almost each paragraph/stanza.  All of the lyrics mentioned in this piece are pretty understandable, considering the title.  Williams' talks about birds in the first and third verses, then sings of the moon and the stars in the second and fourth paragraphs.  He talks about the birds crying, too sad to fly, losing their will to live.  Williams' also mentions a long night, when time moves slowly, and the moon hides behind the clouds to cry.  My favorite verse though, is the last saying, "The silence of a falling star, Lights up a purple sky, And as I wonder where you are, I'm so lonesome I could cry."  I love the imagery he uses throughout the song, but that verse in particular stood out to me.

The melodies of each verse are pretty similar as well, sounding as though something rises, rises, and then falls.  In between each section, there are pretty transitions using string instruments, mainly banjo adding country/hillbilly feel.  Although this is a country song, if you pay attention to the background you'll notice a waltz beat with some sort of percussion (perhaps on a guitar or something).  The instruments remain within their regular roles in hillbilly music.  The music in the background fits pretty well with the lyrics, not contrasting and going well together.  "I'm So Lonely I Could Cry"  sounds like it would be a pretty generic country ballad in terms of tempo, rhythm, etc.

As I listened to this song more, I just pictured how cool it would sound while played on a record player!  Along with this, if people were to dance to this song, it seems as though it would create a mix between the waltz and country dancing.  If you're ever in the mood to listen to sad country music, I highly recommend  "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry,"  by Hank Williams.

  1. I really like how much work and detail you put into you thought this week. I also like how you imagined how people back in the day would listen to it and how you relate to it. I really like how Hank Williams did this song and how relaxing it sounds. Good choses for the week.
